I was comparing the rating I had under profiles and the actual viewable rating. the viewable says I have 3 stars when the one under profiles says I have 5.
I think it would be good to show how rated who. So if two people rated me as 1 I would like to know who.

I agree that we should be able to view who voted....

Then so be it. pizza boy. ;) If people take this board too seriously they really need a life. Lets take our handicap arguement in the other thread it was clear that we were just trying to get at eachother for the fun of it. I didn't rate you and you didn't rate me. So people will just have to relax and deal with it in a mature manner. Anyhow you can't vote more then once... :D

If you don't want to play the "Ratings Game", you can just click the "My Profile" link at the top of the page, and take note of the "display my member rating..." option. That option is more powerful than you think! It basically disables your user rating entirely... it still exists, but nobody can see it, not even you, and since nobody else can rate you, it'll never change, unless you turn it back on in your profile.
So take note... I forecast a lot of complaining about the "member rating" thing, and I'd probably be doing some of it myself it weren't toggleable... but it is, so if anybody doesn't like it he or she can turn it off and be immune to the numerical slings and arrows of his or her peers.

Here's another UBB tip I know from my earlier UBB experiences: the individual page views are often out of date. The UBB code likes to store the actual thread pages as static HTML: they're only re-created when someone posts a new message to a thread or edits a message on a thread. Until that time, the thread page stays the same, regardless of whether any user rating or user profile information changes. The UBB would be more CPU intensive than neccessary if it regenerated a thread page every time someone viewed it.
The forum lists are always dynamic, and your user profile is always dynamic, so they're always up-to-date, and the "Hello, Craig McPherson [ log out ]" at the top of the individual thread pages is dynamic, but the actual table with the thread messages itself in it is fetched from a static HTML file that's only updated when a message is added or edited to the thread.
Got it?

I would complain if it wasn't toggleable. It makes little sense to have allow the user to see who rated him how, since it's only going to lead to "Tit for Tat" fiascoes.
I really don't see the point in it. Everyone I've rated at 5, has rated me at 5 in return. Everyone I've rated at 1 (eg. "utter_macabre", someone very deserving of such a rating) has rated me at 1 in return.
That's just my opinion. I'll be disabling ratings now.

I don't pay much attention to the ratings. It seems like a popularity contest. Thee seems to be an little circle of members with high ratings. When the ratings first came, most of them had a 5 within hours. I don't think anyone should have a 5. Seems like you'd have to be the most helpful person on the board for that.

Why, thank you.
The member ratings seem to be doing more crazy, random stuff. I still show 5 in my profile, but the first two messages I posted today showed 3 and then 4, then after that any other message I posted showed at 5. This was within the space of minutes, so I know the rating itself didn't change.
I'll probably turn it off, cuz it seems to work pretty screwy.

Something is definietly messed up. I've only been rated twice, one 5, and I'm pretty sure the other is a one from someone I may have ticked off because I don't like eminem, because I was a three for a while (average of the two). Now I'm back to 5 again, but I still only have 2 ratings.

Guess I was one of those people. I had/have a 5.. Ofcourse, I disabled ratings so now noone can ruin my 5 star rating, and nobody knows about it either unless I fsck up and tell.. Ack!

I've developed an advanced system for determining how I rate a user:
* Anyone who says something I disagree with gets a 1
* Anyone who says something I agree with (something nontrivial) gets a 5
* Anyone who does not use Debian gets a 1
* Anyone who uses Debian gets a 5
Of course, the danger is that someone will say something decent after I've rated them a one, or someone will say something stupid after I rated them a five, or someone will start using Debian after I've already rated them a one.
It would be great if we could re-rate. This system doesn't allow people to repent & reform.

I get the rating of the person to whom I am replying... I have one star :( and when I reply to someone with 5 stars I get their rating on that post only.
At least I think that's what happens.

I think some bug attacked me once. The viewable rating was 5 and in my profile it said 5 stars and 3 votes. I posted a message and the viewable rating was 3. I thought someone rated me 1 but in my profile it still said 5 stars and 3 votes. Then I posted another post and the viewable rating was 5 again, and 5 stars and 3 votes in my profile. Funny.
Don't tell me this is a "feature." ;)
