i don't know what's up with all this craziness...i'm still new to all of this, could someone please explain this to me?

Looks like you installed some stuff (gaim) and/or played some games/etc.. In the process the files are writable to anyone. eg: 0777

Solution: Go change the permissions.

eg:

chmod -R 0744 /home/alex/tmp/*

0744 = rwx for you. Read only for anyone else.
