Hey all!

I think read somewhere that downloading stuff to install/run on linux had to be done in some special way if done from windows. Is this true? for example, I'm going to download debian (woody) via their ftp site - will wsftp be able to do the job? are there any special options I have to select? for some reason I seem to recall it having to do with Binary/ASCII...

Thanks,
Bill

It will work in windows. The ftp client will have to use Biary mode transfer, but this is done automatically in all modern ftp clients I know.
Wsftp will propably do (I heard it is one of the best there is for win).

I suggest CoffeeCup ftp, absolutely free and nice little graphical add-ins. I forgot the link to it, sorry, but if you do a search on download.com for ftp and/or coffee cup ftp it will be there.

Also, keyword is FTP, the protocol is the same on both sides, thus they communicate regardless of OS.

If the files are tarred, it won't matter. Straight binaries might have problems, but not in my experience.

It doesn't matter what ftp client you use. Make sure you download it as binary. Just keep in mind that Linux tar files tend to use long names with multiple dots, eg: foo-12.3.tar.gz

When this happens Windows gets confused and conveniently renames the file for you as foo_12_3_tar.gz or something similar. Fortunately it's just the name that's been mangled, so just renaming it to what it was before will fix it.

Windows will screw up text files. Such as .c and stuff like that. But I think tar files are safe.

Due to the well documented winmodem effect, I have to download all my Linux files from Windoze. I have had no problems with rpm's or tgz/tar.gz files downloaded in IE5 except that it changes the name. All I do is copy down the name onto a Post-It note, and then change it when I am in Linux. Never had any problems (yet!)

I've downloaded many rpm and tar files without a problem, no renaming of files or corrupting them at all.
