I'm a newbie who installed Linux-Mandrake 72. on my Compaq Presario today. I was finishing up installation when I chose the wrong resolution for my monitor(1024x768) instead of the one my computer could handle(800x600). After I rebooted my computer, I realized my mistake. I tried to correct the error by attempting an "update" of the installation. On the 3rd attempt, my computer told me the partition was full.
I would really like to get rid of everything in my partition so I could start fresh. Is there anyone out there that could help me climb the slippery slope I made for myself?

Ermmm, well, first, I'd recomend blanking out your partitions by entering the setup, and once you get to the disk partitioning part, delete all of them, then save it, and then reboot. Go back into setup, and once you get to that point again, make your partitions, save, and continue forth http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/biggrin.gif
I'm sorry to hear that your monitor only supports 800x600, but hey, it's better than some resoultions I've seen http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/smile.gif

OK, I don't want to screw up by making assumptions again, so let me ask some really basic questions:
1. Where is setup? Is it the screen you get when you install Linux Mandrake or something else?
2. Could you give me a visual clue on what the "disk partitioning part" looks like?
Thanks in advance.

Run through a normal install of mandrake, but instead of updating, install. When it asks you to pick the partitions you want to use for linux, set them up the way they were when you first installed. It will then ask you which partitions you want to format. Make sure the linux paritions are checked. Then proceed through the normall install.

Ummm, the setup is the installer from your CD, when you put the disk in and boot up to it, and let it install.
And the disk partitioning part would look like a tabbed window (last time I remember) and it has your drives, as specified by linux (aka the first hard drive is HDA1...)
Um, and yeah, the alternative is what the guy above said http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/smile.gif

Q: How many existentialists does it take to screw in a lightbulb?
A: Two. One to screw it in and one to observe how the lightbulb itself symbolizes a single incandescent beacon of subjective reality in a netherworld of endless absurdity reaching out toward a maudlin cosmos of nothingness.

If you are new I would recommend that you leave atleast one partition for windows. If you delete the partitions you will not be able to run windows.

Thanks, Durango, everything is working fine in Linux...except one thing. This forum is impossible to read using Linux's Netscape browser, and even worse, I can't adjust the font. It was so bad that I had to switch back to my Windows OS to respond to any of the letters.:-(
Is there anything I can do to prevent this?

Funny, that didn't happen to me when I reformatted both partitions-thank God!

If you did the 500mb install of 7.2 then you should have the Konqueror browser installed too.Its way better than Netscape and just go into settings and configure to change the fonts.

Nonsense - Netscape works fine, as long as you have some fonts for it to use/find. You need to install some True Type fonts and a decent x font server. There are 2 excellent NHF's on the subject here at LNO.
Be sure to disable Java in your Netscape preferences - helps a lot with stability. JavaScript is well supported and should be left enabled - but not for mail/news.

ph34r is right. Also, Mandrake 7.2 includes a great tool called drakfont. This tool will allow you to install Windows fonts very, very easily.
