okay.. i finally got connected! i am a turbolinux text only user.. i used the command 'usernetctl ppp0 up' and i got connected for the first time with my linbox/ppp dialup.. but now what?..

'ifconfig' showed ppp0 with an IP address..

i couldn't ping anything, name or number..
how can i make sure that i am recieving DNS along with IP while connecting..? (isn't there a file somewhere that specifies where to look? and what happens when left blank?)

shouldn't i be able to ping IP addresses though? or is my gateway misconfigured too?

but when i get it all setup; how can i browse http? i figured telnet/ftp should work..

Sounds like you have not specified your ISP name servers IP's.
Look into /etc/resolv.conf and put there those IP's.

is there a way to specify for my linbox to recieve those.. what if my hosts.resolv is empty? where is linux going to look?

i am guessing that i am also going to need a gateway ip from the ISP?..

**eventually i want to setup a caching DNS server..**
