I'm a newbie to Linux and saw information about WinLinux 2001. Any have any thoughts on using it instead of RedHat or Mandrake?

Anything with the prefix win sucks. Not to mention anything with either "2000" or "2001" following its name.

Haha. That was great. Why don't you shut up?

Seriously, in my experience nearly anything with the prefix win (ie winmodem, windows, etc) is not very good. I am also not fond of products which include 2000 or 2001. A bit cheesy for me.

Real reasons it sucks:
-It is not free--WTF?! A linux distro that is not free? <pukes>
-It runs in windows.

It could be good just to get your feet wet a little. But I would reccomend mandrake 8

I certainly agree with Danger Fan. If you haven't tried it yourself, then what gives you the right to form an opinion. WinLinux 2001 could be just what OnAMission is looking for to give Linux a try before commiting himself to a full distro.

Why does Linux HAVE to be free. Who's paying the salaries at Redhat or Mandrake. Perhaps when you get old enough to work, you can get a non-salaried job at Redhat. 40 hours a week and no pay.

Personally, I always purchase the main distro I use. I want to see them all stay in business and I'm always willing to do my share.

I think that I can form an opinion simply from looking at the documentation on the site. It appears to be a very shabby distro.

Linux certainly does not HAVE to be free. That is fine. I, however, will not pay for it. As far as mandrake and redhat making money-I have no idea how they do. On the otherhand, I would not be caught dead using either. However, I appreciate your selfless act of charity.

When I'm old enough to work, eh? I see. I cannot make an assumption about a distro but you can make an assumption about my age? I guess your right. There is so much I don't understand about the world. Thanks for enlightening me.

Why not run mandrake and use partition magic to create a partition for mandrake? No running stuff under windows necessary. I would much rather see a newbie try linux for the first time alone rather than while being crippled by Windows.

BTW, I was being a bit facetious in my original post.. Relax!

Why would you not pay for any distro? Because it's open source?

Well who puts together these distros with nice installers to detect your hardware, setup your devices, install all the software and on and on? Should they not be paid for their work? I think they should, but that's just MY opinion.

Thanks to all for the inputs. Looks like nobody (or not too many) are using WinLinux so if I had any questions, it would be hard to get help.

I think I'm going with Mandrake for starts.

As for paying for a distribution, it doesn't bother me. The distributions are relatively cheap (you get alot for your money compared to M$).

i am more than happy to pay for a distribution but i think they should bring out upgrades as an option in stead of buying the whole os again.

so, for instance you bought mandrake 8, and then in a month or two they bring out mandrake 8.1

it would be a waste of time and money buying the whole os if all you want is the updates.

i know 99.999999% of users are on high bandwidth access, but for the rest of us poor sods with dialup and shared lines, constantly downloading updates isnt always a viable option,.

i would suggest to the linux community who release new versions all the time, suse being one of them to release as normal, but in addition an updates disc at a budget price with the newstuff on it.

what do you think?

Winlinux is a rip-off!!! It was just released in late July but it's using kernel version 2.2.16!!!! Thats over a year old! And you pay a total of $35.00 for one CD. If you need to mix Winblows with Linux get Phatlinux. Kernel 2.4,and the total is $21.95. Version 3.3. Winlinux has got to be connected to Bill Gates because it BLOWS!!!
