I'm looking for a good, free packet sniffer that works in Windows...

The reason is here (http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/Forum22/HTML/003744.html).

Thanks.

If its NT then NT comes along with Network monitoring tool. you can run this and start capturing packets for a given period of time. then you can open these packests and see the contents.

i recently registerd on a Free Online service but their ads were real pain in ***. so i started the tool and dialed the free ISP. after some time i logged off and stopped the tool. opened each and every packet...voila ..i got the user id and pwd...now i am online no ads..and i am using Linux too..(but the ISP claims that they dont support Linux thats diff story).

so in short if you are using NT use Network monitoring tool in Admin tools.

No, I'm not running NT, but I guess I could load 2000. Right now, I'm running Windows ME with BlackICE, but I don'e have any real tools to look at the packets that it capturese (except a binary file editor that won't give me any details)...

Thanks though.

try out Ethereal.
http://www.ethereal.com/distribution/win32/
you need the GTK libs, and the WinPcap driver, but those are linked from that site.

Try etherping... it can do it all.. although it is not free.. you can monitor as well as decifer and "build custom packets.. it is nice..
