i'm curious. if someone is putting their box in promisc mode, how can i avoid that?
i mean, as a normal user who wants to surf the net, etc, can i tunnel my surfing through ssh? will the sniffer detect where i'm surfing to?

Are you on a large network? Or whatever are you afraid of, that someone has a sniffer on a backbone somewhere? http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/smile.gif
I don't think you can tunnel HTTP over SSH. Only thing I can think of is find a proxy outside your network that supports SSL and use that (so communcation between you and proxy will be encrypted.)They do exist, I believe DefCon.Org had one up for a while.

why would you want to tunnel your surfing through ssh? Firstly it is not possible. In order for encryption to work, the far end must be communicating in encryption as well.. who cares who sees your web surfing.. unless your a child pornographer..

dieselboy: There is no reason to insult him just because he is curious about something. There are plenty of reasons to want privacy. That said, partial encryption is possible, like I said, through an SSL-enabled proxy.
Another thing that springs to mind is a product called Freedom. Check out www.freedom.net. (http://www.freedom.net.)
