One of my favorite things about linux is all the amazing apps. I generally go for visually simplistic apps which have little bloat. I was just wondering what your favorite non-essential (ie not something everyone needs-a text based editor, a printer daemon, etc.) apps are. I'm always looking for some cool new apps and I figure I could learn of some nice ones this way.
Here are mine:
1. emelfm - this file manager just kicks ***. It runs in X and is tiny, allows you to customize a ton-for example, you can add buttons to the center panel. I added a 'find' button which runs gtkfind in the current dir. Nice. The support for mime-types is nice too. This filemanager just flys.
2.opera - ahh.. where would I be without opera? I think most realize this is the best browser out there. I prefer it to IE in fact. Multiple windows in the app just rules.
3. grun - this is just a nice little app to bring a run dialog. It is the first thing in my blackbox menu and allows me to not have to open a term for every single thing. Perhaps my most used app.
4. gcompte - a program to keep track of your $. Simple, clean. Less bloated than gnucash and all I need for my measly financial situation.
5. gpasman - encrypts your passwords and allows you to access them with a master password. Great for remembering all those pin #s and discussion board passwords.
6. lyx - my word processor of choice. Amazing output from this tex-based word processor. Great for math.
7. xmame/xmess - all I need for entertainment. Metal Slug. 'Nuf said.
8. ecasound - awesome multitracking software with built in effects. I have made some great recordings with my friends using this. Text based and faster than protools.
9. xkill - since I no longer use netscape, it is not as necessary :D, but it is still nice.
10. balsa - my email client of choice. I compiled it w/ html support. Does everything email based very well.
