matlab for linux

Does anyone know where one can get a free version of a matlab like program, or even matlab for free?

my stupid school will not distribute software for student use.

We use matlab at work (solaris), but I've also made available a program called Scilab. It does some of the same things as matlab, but the price is better...

I don't use it myself, so I couldn't tell you where/how it overlaps with matlab.
