I have tried to install every possible form and version of MySQL using every option imaginable, and I keep getting errors which indicate that the MySQL file itself is corrupt (I'm using Red Hat 7.1, if it matters). I can't imagine this would be possible. Is there another way to obtain MySQL that I'm not aware of? I'd even be willing to pay for it on a CD.

I feel your pain. I have spent forever trying to figure out how to get apache and mysql running, with php. The only way I solved it was to use source for all, the rpm thing just doesn't seem to work. Here are the instructions I followed, I used bits of both: http://www.devshed.com/Server_Side/PHP/SoothinglySeamless/ http://www.linuxguruz.org/z.php?id=31
And the fsking thing works great.
Good luck.
BTW Redhat 7.1

at what stage do you get errors, and what do the errors say? Are you installing the server, developement libs, and the client (I think there may be another .rpm file too, but I haven't messed with mysql in quite a while).
