I'm very new to linux (Mandrake 7.1)
just installed it today on its own drive (not a linux4win install)
it looks good but I can't even figure out the basics ie. connecting to the internet (using Win ME at the moment, shame on me)
also need to know how to install drivers for Voodoo 5 5500 and Hayes Accura modem plus others
Many thanks

Check with linux.3dfx.com for drivers/installation instructions on installing the Voodoo drivers...

Thanks for the quick response
I have already been to 3dfx linux
but i cant understand a word of the instructions
If i download the drivers using windows, can i save them to a floppy and then acces them from linux (assuming i can locate my floppy from within linux, yes i,m that ignorant) and double click them to install ?

you just started linux? well you probebly have it boot up in graphical mode, but in case you didn't this will be helpful.

How are you connecting to the internet?
modem - http://www.linuxnewbie.org/nhf/intel/modems/index.html this should be everything you need.

PPPoE DSL - you want to get a program called rp-pppoe it very simple and works great.

cable or static dsl - you should of typed in the IP addresss when you booted up, if case you didn't: ifconfig
read the manual for it (man ifconfig)
and you should be able to get it going from there.

I just saw that you needed drivers for a modem, dumb me, well that page should help you out.

Thanks GACCM
I'm on that page now
Linux did recognize the functions of my modem, but not the brand/model

I'm confussed over the reference to "Earthlink" and the ip address required to connect.
I am going to connect through a UK ISP called Redhotant, will I need to acertain an ip address for this or is "Earthlink" something that is internal to linux ?
