Hmm... for some crazy reason i can't install the new kernel (2.2.18).
I'm using Caldera2.4 and it uses the 2.2.14 kernel so i figured i should install the new one. I decided to download the new version and not the patch because i'm lucky enough to have a cable modem so the download wasn't a problem.
I have read the README file and the howto and I have even read a file from rpmilius= www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/Forum12/HTML/000076.html (http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/Forum12/HTML/000076.html)
To help you better understand where i'm comming from i'm going to try to explain what I have been through.
(from a fresh---full--- install)
First I downloaded linux-2.2.18.gz
deleted the folder linux from /usr/src.
I then moved the linux-2.2.18.gz to /usr/src ran this gzip -cd linux-2.2.18.gz | tar xfv -
I then made a symbolic link by typeing ln -s linux-2.2.18 /usr/src/linux.
I then ran make mrproper... then make dep... then make xconfig... saved it... then make bzlilo... then make modules... then modules_install... then I went into /sbin and ran lilo.
I rebooted the system and then ran uname -r... the kernel hadn't been installed.
(from---arg---another---full---fresh install)
I then followed the files by rpmilius and wow when i rebooted my system and ran uname -r it said that I was now using the 2.2.18 kernel... success... well not really.
I didn't follow the post exactly... mkinitrd gave me a command not found and when i edited the lilo.conf file mine didn't look exactly like his... but i changed things to what I thought made sense.
my usb mouse didn't work and neither did my nic card (i'm sure other hardware didn't work as well) I put the adapter on my usb mouse and ran lizardx... and had it working as a ps/2. I then ran make xconfig and all my wordly usb options had been selected as well with the 3c59x (the module for my nic card).
I also tried going into kcontrol... under coas... and selected kernel...hopeing that it would have my needed module so that i could load it... it wasn't there. I then took all the old modules from /lib/modules/2.2.14 and moved them to /lib/modules/2.2.18 went back into kcontrol... found the module, but when i went to load it... it didn't work.
The Big question is... how do i install a new kernel in caldera linux 2.4.
How did you do it... and please only reply if it worked... thank you so much for reading all this crap :o)
-Matt Luu... if your reading this don't reply... i love ya much man... but your realy bad technical support :o)
