I need to have a Linux Mandrake7.2 and a Win98SE share a cable modem (through hub). Can someone advise me exactly how to do this ? Can the Linux system act as a gateway for the Win98 ? How exactly can I set this up ? I have tried DrakConf's Internet Sharing tool --- it said I need NS_Socks or something like that. I am a VERY newbie. Thanks.

Plug the cable modems ethernet cord into the hub, have the Win98 and Mandrake box also plugged in. Tell Mandrake to get Internet from the LAN, using dhcp. Same with the Win98 box, open IE and tell it to get Internet from the LAN... Assuming your cable provider does not use any logon software, in which case it will become a bit more difficult.

First off, you don't need the hub. You will need to put 2 nics (eth0 and eth1) in the linux box...
Attach the linux box to the cable modem with the first nic (eth0) and then the windoze box to the 2nd nic (eth1)....At this point you will have to set up your internet connection stuff and then build ipchains and ipmasq but for that I would suggest the reading the HowTo's and the articles on this site....

G'Day......

Five is right. That hub thing is easily detected and just plain sloppy networking http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/smile.gif Have your linux box run NAT (there are a few NHF's that cover ip masquerading.. check em out)..
