When I ran lyns -source http://go-gnome.com/ | sh I got this error:

1. Run apt-get upgrade only (if upgrading from previous Helix version)
2. Install Helix GNOME (core files only)
3. Install Helix GNOME (full installation)

Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.

Since you only requested a single operation it is extremely likely that
the package is simply not installable and a bug report against
that package should be filed.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

Sorry, but the following packages have unmet dependencies:
task-helix-gnome: Depends: eog but it is not going to be installed
E: Sorry, broken packages
Install finished!

I have sucessfully updated to woody and my sources.list file looks like this:

Does anyone know what the problem is?

you might want to add the deb list for sawmill (sawfish, whatever) window mannager to the list, seeing as that is the default from startup... the souces.list mirror is...

<snip>

deb http://www.rcpt.to/ pending main
deb http://www.rcpt.to/ non-patent main
deb-src http://www.rcpt.to/ pending main
deb-src http://www.rcpt.to/ non-patent main

</snip>

then try working with that http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/biggrin.gif

ok... here's my final offer... after browsing through the http://spidermonkey.helixcode.com/ site, I found that if you change the unstable bit of it, to woody, that might help, because right now I'm seeing the eog package in that directory....
http://spidermonkey.helixcode.com/distributions/Debian/dists/woody/main/binary-i386/

so...

deb http://spidermonkey.helixcode.com/distributions/debian unstable main

becomes....

deb http://spidermonkey.helixcode.com/distributions/debian woody main

Btw, do you know how I can get it to stop trying to setup libguile6? I tried apt-get remove libguile6 which worked the first tiem I had this problem but doesnt anymore.

You may want to try this:

apt-get --fix-broken dist-upgrade

Worth a shot.

Have you tried simply installing eog?
apt-get install eog
Read what the error is (or unmet dependency is) and maybe track down the problem that way.
I have a very similar sources.list and haven't had this problem, but then again, I run stable (mostly http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/wink.gif ).

Yeah I think I did that so then I got different dependency problems. I'll post them later.

When I did that command I got this:

I have this exact problem right now. What i decided to do was just install the base install of gnome and sawfish, and then install the programs little by little as i need them rather than gettng a whole lot of ****.

Run "apt-get install task-helix-core"

By the way mate, when i installed gdm (gnome display manager) to satisfy dependancies for helix-gnome, my backspace key stopped working whilst i am in X. Did this happen to you? if so how did you fix it? its driving me nuts!

Yeah that happened but not when I was installing helix. It happened after I upgraded to woody. Then I ran dexter to setup x and it fixed itself.

Go into dselect and tab to option #2 .. hit enter--> space bar--> then the / key. that will bring up your search option. Type libguile6, that should highlight libguile6, hit the - key while libguile6 is highlighted. Then ... enter--> space bar, repeat this process (enter--> space bar) until you get back to the main dselect window. Select option #5 to remove libguile6. Next:

apt-get install libguile9.

Hope this helps.

Ok I think my problem is helix is dependant on libguile6. How can I get this to configure properly and not give me errors when it tries to?
Thanks

Try dselect and remove libguile9.... another shot in the dark.

Damn, I still can't get it working, if I can't get it to work, I'm gonna go with Slackware. But the idea of compiling all the Helix Gnome stuff from source scares me.

Are you running woody?
I don't know if that makes a difference but I must say that running stable has been much better for my sanity than when I tried running woody/unstable.
I got kde2 and helix gnome working without much of a hiccup. (After installing kde2 I lost my backspace but haven't had time at home to try the different solutions that have been suggested so far... I will soon!)
But I think running a "bleeding edge" system is risky, at best. On a fresh potato install, the first thing I did was install helix. No probs.
I wish I knew a solution to your problem, Mikenell. What a stitch. But maybe try running stable.
By the way, if you have access to a fast connection and a cd burner, the Debian potato r2 iso should be ready in the next couple of days. There's also a link on the debian cdimage site (I think its http://cdimage.debian.org ) for a couple of unofficial isos, a potato "extra" that has kde2, helix and others... also unofficial woody isos.
Check them out... perhaps you won't need to worry about all this if you try installing one of those... again, though, they're unofficial cds.
Good luck!

Thanks for your help everyone but I've decided to go install Slackware. I want to learn linux and I think apt kind of makes it too easy for me (despite the problems I've been having, hehe) and does it all for me, I'd rather learn it all myself. I'm gonna install Debian on another machine and probably keep it stable like ColdPack suggested.
Thanks Again
