Did you run one of the x configuration thingies? I don't know which come with Slack, XF86config, xconfigurator, X -configure, and there are probably others. But if you use bash try typing Xc or xc and then press tab to see what options come up, and run one of them. Otherwise you may need to edit your X config file (on mine it's /etc/X11/XF86config-4). Hope this helps

hey bud,

Glad to see a fellow new slack user.

u gotta set ur vid card and stuff up

best bet is to go to xterm as root and type:

XFree86 -configure

that will make a XF86Config.new file in your root dir, view that file and get all your settings, mainly card chipset and crap like that.then type:
xf86config

then you should be able to use X just fine.

Good luck bud!

Just installed Slack tonight. I'm getting way fewer errors then i was with mandrake 8 trying to install the libraries needed for X and KDE (i'm installing everything myself for the experience).

I installed slack 8 a few days ago and had the same problem. I will try what you guys suggested, but just wanted to let you know that it was not a one time problem.

its not a problem...its done that way on purpose. Not setting up X during the install provides better stability (if X crashes during install, it could create problems)

I hate to use the words of microsoft, but in this case its true. It's not a bug, its a feature.

Hey guys thanks for all the help, but have another question

tried what you guys suggested, configured everything and everything seemed ok...
but when i did startx, there was a second of hesitation, then the following error came up:

Fatal error:
AddScreen/ScreenInit failed for driver 0

any ideas?

did you run xf86config? If not try that. It will help you chose your video card, mouse and monitor settings. What video card do you have?

The Google search results for that error. (http://www.google.com/linux?site=search&restrict=linux&hl=en&lr=lang_en&safe=off&q=AddScreen%2FScreenInit+failed+for+driver+0&btnG=Google+Search)

I have an intel i810... I looked through the google search results, and it mentioned something about "agpgart"...

but the only other reference i could find was it being a module, or not installed with the kernel...

complete newbie here so can anyone shed some light?

I did use xf86config, after choosing my video car, mouse, montior, etc, i got that error.
