I'll start with the traditional self degredation: I have no idea what I am doing, I am an idiot, pity me. I just got me a Linux distribution (SuSE, picked because it had the unique quality of being on the shelf at the store when I went to get Linux), and I am of course already confused. It starts and I can kind of navigate myself. I would like to get it to recognize my modem, but I don't know where to start. All the KDE and Yast stuff included refuses to help, so if anyone can suggest anything I would be in their eteranl debt.

Thank you.

more info is needed. we need to know what kind of modem it is, and the chipset it uses wouldn't hurt, if you can get it without a lot of hassle.
y'see, there are two kinds of modem: those that work with linux, and those that don't. most if not all external modems connected to a serial port will work with minimal effort. internal modems are usually ok if you can set i/o and irq with jumpers on the modem (getting more and more rare!), though really the main thing is that the modem not be a controllerless modem (i.e., winmodem). that said, even _some_ winmodems will work. check out www.linmodems.org (http://www.linmodems.org) to see if your modem is supported under linux.
a great resource right here is the forum search - when it works. you can also check the NHFs. a lot of the work has already been done and written about.
BTW, a cheap modem ($12 is what i paid, new) that i found to be pretty easy to set up is a linmodem using the pctel chipset.
anyway, if you poke around a bit and still can't find what you need, give another yell! :)
