Just bought a brand new system here are the specs
Pentium 4, 1.8ghz
256mb PC800 RDRam
80gig WD Hard-drive
Geforce3
16x Lite-On DVD/CD
---------------------------
Thats it in a nutshell, the reason for my post is, i need some suggestions on what to do with this monster. I have windoze on it just because I need my daily gaming fix. But other than that its useless to me. I would like some suggestions from the crowds as to what i can do with this machine.
i.e what version of linux should i load. anything else anyone can think of.
P.S> no i cannot give this machine to anyone :D ;)

I don't know much, except for the fact that linux/unix support for such a latest machine is less. However, other fellows might give you a better picture about it's usage.

personally i wouldnt run linux on that machine, it would be a damn waste of hardware.
Any version of Linux or BSD should run just fine on that machine, Nvidia's drivers should also work with that graphics card in full 3d (although neither Windows, Linux or anything else can realize the full potential with the Geforce 3 right now). A machine like that is just to have fun with, so go do it!

I bet you can compile a LFS pretty damn quick on that monster. :D
Well, you should be able to do just about anything with it.

so should I wait till the next round of distro's come out. Or should i take a chance on something, decisions decisions. I have the following distro's at my disposal:
Redhat 7.1
Suse 7.2 Personal
Slackware 8.0
Progeny Debian 1.0
Debian 2.2
TurboLinux 6.0
:) :D

Install Slackware 8.0 on a 1gb partition and do a linux from scratch installation on the rest. Make a lot of partitions (otherwise it may be a bit slow with 80gb) and use reiserfs. That system would kick ***.

I have to agree with some of the guys.
Trade it in for a AMD 1.4 gig with 256 DDR ram and a mother board with AMD's own chipset and you will blow away anything that is manufactured by man for the desktop.
