Hello,

I recently purchased the Storm 2000 Deluxe distribution, and I was wondering if it's possible to eventually "upgrade" the distribution to standard Debian? Is it just a matter of changing my source.list to point to debian.org rather than stormix.com?

Thanks
John

I'm not quite sure what you want as Storm "Hail" is about as up to date (for stable) as it gets. It's based on Debian Potato which is the latest stable release from Debian.
You can upgrade (or rather "dist-upgrade") to Debian "woody" but you run the risks of running unstable. This ca be done via apt-get pointing to any unstable tree on the stormix ftp site or woody tree as well as on the debian ftp site.
All in all, you can do whatever you want with apt-get... you can add dozens of sources to your sources.list. Do a search on this site for Craig's monster sources.list. That has just about every source you'll likely ever need... and many you may never need!

Correct me if I'm wrong...but I think that he's asking if he can migrate from Storm to pure-debian. Not necessarily upgrade-->more of a move sideways.

I tried it once, and I got some wierd dependency issues (I just removed a few libs and it fixed itself) because I think they use different libraries for a few programs here and their. But it went fairly smoothly for me.

I run Storm and use, primarily, only debian and debian mirrors for my apt-get sources. Haven't seen much of a problem.
I did try (for grins) a plain old debian install (potato) and when it asked me to put in another cd (if I had one) I put in my Hail cd... It ended up installing mostly from the Hail cd as some of those packages were "newer". It did install some things from it's own cd that Storm didn't have.
But boy was it a messy install! Whoo! I didn't have it that way for more than 3 hours and BLAM! she was gone. SPM and SAS refused to work. Kind of funny, though.
So, keep your sources.list pointed to debian and debian mirrors and you should be okay. I never (hardly ever, I should say) use the storm site in my sources.list.

All,

Thanks for your replies. I am interested in eventually doing a 'lateral' upgrade to pure Debian. Once I try, you'll all be the first to know if I have problems! http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/smile.gif

Thanks
