I have a small home network with a linux box running rh7. Using my regular box on my desk I telnet into the server and do my stuff, but I seem to have some problems executing some commands over the telnet link such as restarting the samba daemons. What am I missing? Oh lordy Im so new I know....ANy help would be appreciated.

Also whats Id like to know whats your favorite reference book for linux. I have books that show me how to setup X, gnome, kde dialup and all that but im looking for something that will introduce me to some more commands that i should now, what scripts and daemons run (should run) on startup and their directory locations etc.

PS: I do su to root when i try these commands over the telnet link.

Well my fine feathered friend.. couple of questions first:

#1. Which Distro
#2. Did you configure samba (swat etc)
#3. Exactly what problems are you having?
#4. Any programs that make dangerous changes to the system or run at a port below 1024 must be ran while root (aka su)

DrDrake
1. Redhat & on both machines
2. I have samba configured for some directory and file shares. I havent been using SWAT. I edit smb.conf manually. Figured Id learn more that way.
3. Problems, cannot execute commands over a telnet link that i could as if I were sitting at the console. Such as smbstatus, samba restart, etc..
4. I have been su in as root before I run any commands...

Thanks in advance.
