It's in .tgz format, and I can't get it to install. I have done tar zxvf and cd MPlayerdirectory, but I don't know what to do after that.

cd Mplayer (or whatever the directory is named, for me it's MPlayer-20010815)
cd DOCS
more INSTALL

read through that (or print it out)

I get to ./configure and it tells me to upgrade to gcc v 3.0 picky

You can try it with "./configure --disable-gcc-checking" if that doesn't work you could try xine.

xine rpm's here which work on both red hat 7.1 and mandrake 8. http://seawolf.freshrpms.net/
