now that i have a killer dsl connection, i'm gonna try debian. however, i don't know if i should download an iso (is there even and iso, i couldn't find it) or just download what they say, and finish the rest by the ftp install. suggestions?

You can get the iso from www.linuxiso.org (http://www.linuxiso.org) . I'm not sure how up to date that is (I assume it's the newest) because I don't keep up with the Debian news.
I personally prefer the iso, just because I like to have a hard copy of something. Plus I can take it over to a friends house and install it there, even if they don't have a good net connection.

Yeah, there are ISOs. If you've got the bandwidth and a burner, go for a CD install. Makes it easy if things go wrong to just start over quickly.
