A friend of mine has a server and he would like to host web space on it. He asked me if I could do this, but Frankly I don't know where to start. I am very new to linux and unix in general but would love to tackle this task and learn a ton. Right now all I have is the hardware. (no OS installed yet)
Any ideas where I should start after I get an OS installed?

Getting the latest version of whatever distro you will use should have the current version of the Apache webserver. Besides the massive amount of Apache documentation available on the web and the docs installed with Apache, you can also try www.apache.org (http://www.apache.org)
You will also need a good firewall and configure it properly. A good start would be the LNO Security NHF's.
You can get distros that are specifically configured as webservers and firewalls. The new Caldera Server 3.1 would be a good choice. You can check it out at www.caldera.com (http://www.caldera.com) to find out the details and included packages.
