Last night I had to reinstall Mandrake 8 cause it toasted for some reason. But I was working on reinstalling Quake and finished that and then did the point release. But all im getting is a black screen. Any ideas on what could be happening? Thanks for the help.

Do you run it from the command line? If so, redirect the output (both stdout and stderr) to one or two log files. Take a look at that file.
Example: quake3 > file.txt 2&>1 should redirect both stdout and stderr.
Once the black screen comes up, hit Ctrl-C or whatever you do to kill it.
Then look at the file for error messages. Let us know.

unfortunetly nothing is showing in those files. Could it be how im installing the point release? Im installing it by copying it to a directory and then extracing it and copying the appriate files into the approrite directories.

If nothing is in those files, then there aren't any messages coming out of the executable.
I have no experience with Q3, so I don't know how to install the point release, so I don't know if that might be it.
Sorry :(

what video card and do you boot directly to kde? if the card is a geforce and you use kde, try logging out, restart in terminal mode, login and then start kde with "startx". if that works, then the "fix" -more of a workaround, really - can be found in other posts on this site.
if none of the above applies, then please ignore me. :)
otoh, if it does apply, check this: http://www.linuxnewbie.org/cgi-bin/ubbcgi/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=4&t=013696
