The first and most important thing you need to do is find a good search engine. You will need it for further help.

My personal recommendation:

1. Use Partition Magic to create 4 new partions. 3 of them ext2 and 1 of them linux swap. The Linux swap should be twice your ram or 256Meg, whichever is LESS. The 3 ext2 partitions should be, to start, 1Gig, 2Gig, and 3Gig.

2. Once they are created access your bios. See if it has the option to boot from CD. If your computer is less than 3 years old and ATX it should have this option. If not I can give you directions to make floppy boot disk.

3. Make sure that you extracted the ISO and did not do a direct copy of the .iso files to CD. Put them in the drive and if they just have one file, you did a direct copy. You do not want this. If you have multiple directories then you are good.

4. Reboot your computer with the first Mandrake CD in the drive and setup will begin.

5. Most of the stuff is pretty self explanitory. When you get to the part about making partitions, make sure you chose the custom option. Here is where you will mount the various partitions you made earlier. mount the 1Gig as '/'. Mount the 2Gig as '/home' and the 3Gig as '/usr'.

6. Somewhere in the setup it will give you the option to use lilo. This is linux loader. If you want you can install this in the MBR. This will start lilo on boot and will give you the choice to boot to win98 or linux.
The alternitive is to put it into the / directory. This way you can use BootMagic to boot the system. Without lilo in one of the linux partitions, bootmagic will not recognize a bootable partition. If you chose linux from BootMagic, it will bring you to lilo then just hit enter key to start linux.

If anything is unclear, try the Linux-Mandrake site and look for setup documentation. They have a .PDF file that does a great job of discribing the set up.
