how is the message of the day file set up?
the file had one line in it like "not done yet" so i added some of my own to it... on the startup it displays, but it displays the WHOLE file... i only want one line at a time... is there a character or something that will act likea carriage return?
also, are there any places where i can download motd files?

when u say the WHOLE file, do you mean it displays it all on a single line? my motd file (/etc/motd) seems perfectly fine in vi, so maybe its whatever u use that makes it weird (just a guess)

well i made the file from the existing one, and just added lines underneath.
like this:
Do not eat your toenails.
Cat's love cat food.
You are not using Windows.

and so on. and it display it just like it is in the text file.

optech:

The motd file is just a text file that gets displayed upon boot. If you want to have randomized motd's, look at the fortune program. It'll do just that. http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/smile.gif

yes, i know this, and i am using it, however the file it read from had only one line in it, so i added my own. and it displays the whole file instead of just one line at a time.
