If you're getting better FPS in Linux, your settings in M$ need tweaking badly....

Using the default config, I get 35 fps on my machine (p2-350, 224mb ram, v3-2000) in either 95 or Linux, using the default id config. A spare G4 with the ATI card I have layin around at work does 32fps with the same config (id default). After tweaking my config, I get 55.5 to 56.5 fps in linux consistantly, and with the exact same config, I get 52.something fps in win95 - just a tad slower. Doing things like playing MP3's or burning a CD in windows just makes stuff fail, blue screen, and major slowdown, but it has no apparent effects in Linux.

I was using winme and i tweaked the hell outta it, cause i wanted a high 3dmark2000 score.
for q3a i got 109fps in windows and 112 in Linux

1024x786x32
and almost everything on

Is your X server running in 24 bit color? If it's only running in 16 bit color, Q3 will only run in 16 bit color, and will therefore be faster. This could account for the speed difference...

I get 25fps more in windows with the same config

Ok, so if the xserver is running 16bit and quake says 32bit its really only 16bit??

if that is true, then it must be 16bit not 32bit.

How do you find out what your framerate is in Q3? I really don't feel like sitting here with a stopwatch and counting....

To benchmark Q3 just pull down the console (~ key) and type timedemo 1 then demo demo001 ... after it runs through the demo at warp speed just pull down the console again and it'll tell you how many frames per second you averaged. Also to see your frames per second in game type /cg_drawfps 1 at the console.

I have a PIII 500 with 128MB of RAM. I have a TNT2 Ultra. I am running Q3 in 32-bit color at 1024x768. My average framerate is 21.3. Is this low?

At 1024 in linux that is probably not too bad. The higher the resolution the more of a difference in performance there is between Linux and Windows. Are you using the new drivers and XF86 4.0.1? On my Celeron 566@850/GeforceDDR I get 99 frames per second in Linux and about 102 in Windows ... thats at 800x600 32bit with all the eyecandy except for marks on walls.
If you aren't currently using the new drivers and XF86 4.0.1 you'll probably get a nice performance boost upgrading.
