ok, i installed quake3 using loki's instructions.

Now, when i run quake 3, it's amazingly working, except that the screen has moved over, and part of it is no longer on my monitor. Is there a way to fix this?

Do you have 640x480 (or whatever you are playing q3 at) as a defined res in your X config? If Q3 is running at 640x480, and you only have 800x600 defined, then it will do what you are describing...

I had this problem too :/
You will have to configure you monitor for that resolution. Use xvidtune or some video configurator for your distro :]

Sure, just pass the proper arg to it on startup... or edit your config file by hand.

Personally, I'd make a backup of your XF86Config file and re-config it to include lower resolutions.

If you do it that way the command you want to change or add to your launcher/script is r_mode x (default is 3 which is 640x480, 4 is 800x600, 5 is 960x720 and so on). Edit the q3config in your /home/yourusername/.q3a/baseq3 folder or add +set r_mode x to the end of the command you use to launch the game.
Though I must say I agree with ph34r ... just add the lower resolutions to your XF86Config(-4) file.

I don't belive its a resolution problem, his screen has to be configured for his q3a resolution
