why do game developers hate opengl?
why do they insist that d3d is better?
why do they have such resentment for opengl?
why don't they make their lives easier when porting to linux and just use opengl?

i swear, they are stupid. they use d3d, just cuzz they can, and then ***** and moan about how "unstandard", and difficult to develop for linux is

1) they don't even comprehend that they might want to sell games on Mac of Linux

2) If someone isn't doing a FPS that requires lots of 3d rendering, then openGL isn't that good.

3) DirectX was designed to "cover all the bases" for developers. All basic functions you can think for a game can be done using directX

4) Microsoft owns directx. so the speed of development for directx is controled by MS. openGL is controled by a board of multiple componies, which you can imagine will always be slower than 1 compony.

OpenGL is ****loads easier to develop for though. I can't believe people are even still USING d3d, personally.

I think another thing is that these companies spend much money setting up there develop process. They got there whole development process streamlined and running well. To throw that all away and reorganize to go to opengl isn't always so easy. Unless theres a huge(and I mean huge) advantage to switch, it's not worth it to reorganize your whole company.

Kinda goes back to the old "If it aint broke, don't fix it"

too bad, too bad

if there's one thing i can't stand is that old saying; every old fart that likes windows uses it as an excuse not to even listen to you when talking about linux :(

look at id, they are obviously the major gaming company in the world, they push the boundries of games every time they release a new quake (aswell as whoever make unreal, unreal 2003 really does look unreal!! but then again doom3 just looks mental!).
they love OpenGL, the problem is open gl just isnt as advanced as dx8 at the mo. iread an article the other day that was saying some developers have just got the beta for dx9!
but anyway, OpenGL rules, and looks so much better than dx! :)

You mean that little company called Epic? UT 2003 looks awesome! I haven't been able to find any info about a Linux version (like they did with UT) and I'm getting bummed about that :(

Not that Linux isn't a VERY cool gaming platform, and not that games are not fun. But there are very fundamental reasons that Loki went broke. And most people in the Open Source movement just don't get it.

No one is going to pay to develop games in Linux unless they can see in advance they are going to get a return on their investment. And while the level of software theft (piracy) remains over 90% no one is going to invest.

Now, add in the fact that M$ has released the Xbox which also uses d3d. This means that porting all those neato PC titles over to the xbox will be easy and voila! another instant market created with a minimal investment from the developer.

So, if you're a game developer looking for a return on your investment, where are your investment dollars going to go?

I don't know where your getting your numbers, but I would say that software piracy in the linux world is much lower than in the windows world and nowhere near 90%. Yes linux people can get most everything they need to be productive for free, and yes there are the few that think all software should be free, but most linux users work in or around the technology and programing world and realize that these programers need to get paid for thier work. I would say that most linux users who aren't willing or able to pay for a software title either find a free alternative or do without. Much more so than in the windows world.

Loki didn't go broke because no one spent money on their games.

Loki went broke because their CEO / owner / CFO (actually he was only CFO every other day, because if he wasn't, his wife was) person guy was a complete MORON.

He was spending company money on things like big-screen TVs, as opposed to things like paychecks for employees.

The 90% figure is based on the number of people I hear whining online about Overpeer and generaly griping about having to pay for games and other software. It is not a hard figure but rather an opinion. OTOH, since I work in the IT industry I rub elbows with alot of Linux (and Windows) users. I can easily (and athoritatively) say that over 90% of the people I have associated with (professionally) over the past 7 years had no compunctions about stealing software.

And if all the games aren't being stolen (pirated if you want the cutsey term) then why did Loki go Chapter 11? I certainly hear enough people say they want commercial quality games for Linux.
