I've been trying to make my computer into a dual-boot between Linux-Mandrake and Windows 2000. I downloaded the 2 isos and everything worked fine until when it was nearly finished installing the packages it popped up with an error "ldconfig failed" and then i couldnt do anything more without it coming up. My system specs are
PII 350mhz
7.56gb ide hard drive (1.7gb in Linux Ext2 partition, 200mb in swap)
Generic 7mb video card
Generic sound card
If ya need any more msg me please
Once the error has popped up I have no choice but to restart and forget the install
Any ideas of whats wrong and/or how to fix it???

Is 1.7GB enough space for a Mandrake 8.0 install? You installed from both CD's or is the second done after the install is complete?
I've never seen that particular error posted here. Have you tried installing with a different package selection?

Try an automatic install (not expert) and see if it makes it through.. If so you know there's something wrong with what you're doing.

1.7gb is more than enough (or at least thats what the install says) to install Mandrake. I've tried expert and recommended mode, graphical and text; and nothing seems to work.

Did you verify the downloaded iso images using md5sum against the ones provided from the d/l site? Could be a bad download or some packages are missing which would seem odd during the initial install.
The security NHF's explain how to use md5sum.

i dont know how to use MD5 things in winblowz. The package install works fine, its after the packages are installed, when it's sposed to prompt for the root password that it comes up with the error

When installing 8, let it install from the first cd and when it asks for the second cd specify that you don't have it. I had a somewhat similar problem and that worked for me. You'll just have to install what you want off the extention cd manually. Good luck.

do u mean when it asks you which cds you have or when it asks you to put in the second cd?
