Did you install it as root? This would be ideal, then it keeps all the personal user settings in your home directory. Do you have OpenGL setup properly? Run a native Linux OpenGL game to test (Tux Racer is a good one :)) Run UT from the command line ut and see what the errors are (post them here)...I had no problems getting it to work on RH7.2

what errors do you get when you run ut from the command line?

Not exactly related, but I am having problems with Quake 3 as follows (any help appreciated):

I am having problems with my video card and OpenGL (I think). I have
a Pentium II 400 with an onboard ATI Rage Pro (8MB) AGP. I am using
the ATI Mach64 driver on Mandrake 8.1. As a side note, I have tried
changing the graphics driver to more closely match, as I see it, the
card that I have to the ATI Mach64 3D Rage Pro driver, but when I do
a restart having made the changes, and then check again in the
hardware section it seems to have reverted to the ATI Mach64 driver.
Maybe that's part of the problem, so any help there would be
appreciated.

In any case, the problem manifests itself as follows:

When trying to start Quake 3, having completed the install I get the
following error messages (lines totally in quotations are my
comments):-

xLib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0".
xLib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0".
xLib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0".
xLib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0".
"etc., etc., etc."
Couldn't get a visual
"tries to load LibMesaVoodoo.so or some such"
failed
Error: GLimp_Init() could not load the OpenGL subsystem

No Quake 3 binary for x86/glibc2.1

-----------------
Basically, the way it looks on screen is as if its remained in
1024*768, but the screen has magnified to the top left 640*480
section. I can still scroll around and such, but obviously this is
not ideal - not to mention not having started Quake 3. Incidentally,
I get the same problem with TuxRacer (I don't just play games on
this, but it would be nice to be able to once in a while), so I'm
pretty sure its not just Quake.

Thanks for any help, and please bear in mind that I'm new to Linux,
so if you can be as basic as possible that would be appreciated.

Cheers, Tom

Hey, I had this same problem when fixing up X (I broke it pretty badly, dont ask  ) In your /etc/X11/XF86config file (or /etc/X11/XF86config-4 if it exists) you need to make sure there is a line that says Load = "glx" without anything infront of it (ie: #). If there is no line there, put it in with the other load options. Restart X, and try again :D

TTFN,

ffs... ubb code

Thanks for the advice. I tried it, but no dice, as they say. I may well have not implemented it properly. Here is what I did.

I have both XF86Config and XF86Config-4. There is a section in the latter that is called "Modules" and has a number of other Load "xxx" entries, so I added it to that (since the other entries didn't have an "=" I didn't include this). Also, I figured that since I am using X Free 3.3.6 maybe I should do the same to XF86Config (not sure if this is relevant or not). I was looking in that file and couldn't find any other Load "xxx" or Load = "xxx" entries so I basically added in a Section "Modules" section (modelled on the one I found in XF86Config-4) and added the line Load "glx" in there, along with the EndSection bit.

Still no joy. Any pointers?

Cheers, Tom

Are you sure you're using X3.3.6? X -version. Which ever version you use, post the XF86Config/XF86Config-4 file here.

Also what video driver/accelerator do you have and what drivers?

Hi,

Thanks for persisting, much appreciated.

You can take a look at both documents here:
http://www.tomandshirl.com/linux/XF86Config.txt
http://www.tomandshirl.com/linux/XF86Config-4.txt

I put the information that I have on the video card and drivers in a previous posting, but basically its an on board ATI Rage Pro 3D (8megs), and I was using the ATI Mach64 driver, but tried to change it to a more appropriate one that seemed to be a closer fit. In the Mandrake control center under Display it still says ATI Mach64, but in these config files it looks like its the one I chose. I am new to all of this as you have doubtless guessed, but am keen to get it working if I can. Here is what my Display section in the Control Center says:

XFree 3.3.6

Keyboard layout: US
Mouse type: IMPS/2
Monitor: Generic|Generic High Frequency SVGA 1024x768 @ 70kHz
Graphic Card: ATI Mach64
Graphic Memory: 8192 kb
XFree86 Server: Mach64
XFree Driver: ati

Hope this helps.

Cheers, Tom

Simple, Umod Pack (http://umodpack.sourceforge.net/umodpack-0.5b16-allinone.tar.gz) Install and run as root and you can install umods, skins, maps, packs...err well, everything.
