OK I finally installed UT on linux. I have to say I am less than impressed. First the details:
PIII 450
256 Mb Ram
Voodoo Banshee
RedHat 7.1
UT GOTY
ut-install-436-GOTY.run

Install went great. From my login I opened a terminal su - ed to root and ran the setup program with default dir.

I have tried both OpenGL and Glide in 640x480 fullscreen and windowed and my frame rates range from 40fps to 3fps with more 3fps than 40. This makes for an unplayable game. In win98 I get 35 to 50 with 40 ave and no jerkyness.

Can anyone offer any ideas as to why the poor performance in Linux?

Thank you

Mike

Sounds like there is something eating up your resources. I have this problem when updatedb runs (I have a bad habit of starting the computer and hopping into a game right away, then updatedb kicks off...)

When this happens exit the game quickly (~ quit) and check top to see what is going on...

Part of the problem, too, is that Voodoo Banshee.

If you can spare $60 + shipping, grab a Radeon 7500 DDR, they're pretty nice. Plus XFree 4.2 has 3D support for them (through DRI). If not, you can probably find a decent GeForce2 (I'd recommend a GTS if you can) for $30 or $40.

I appreciate your replies.

First, there are no resource hogs running at the time, I have checked that.

Second, my Voodoo banshee works just fine in windows, I can get 43fps average. If I have to pay money just to get linux to work right that seems pretty silly to me.

I have done a little more playing around and have found that for the most part game play is OK. but there are certain textures that the computer chokes on in linux. Water and glass are the two that I noticed. but even when I avoid these areas of the map my frame rate is still about 10fps less than in win98.

I would really like to play UT in linux and it would be one less thing that I would boot into win98 for. I hope that somebody can give me some insight into what is going on.

thank you

Mike
