When I run top, I see that X is supposedly using 200-300% of my memory. I know part of this is the video board's memory, but the memory info shows that all my physical RAM is being used up, and I'm working in swap memory.

When I run a game such as UT, it swaps out every few seconds, causing it to be virtually unplayable.

I'm using the NVidia drivers... Is there any way I can keep X from hogging so much memory? Or is my only option to buy more RAM? (not a very attractive route at this point, since I have no money)

Thx

What window manager are you using?

It shouldn't be taking up that much memory.

I'm using Enlightenment... It's never given me this kind of trouble with memory before... I'll try something else though, just to be sure.

I tried GNOME and AfterStep (which is supposed to be pretty lean on resources), with very little appreciable difference in memory usage from Enlightenment. It appears to really be the X server eating up most of the memory...

Weird. What X server are you using? Version, and package? What video card?

And how much system memory do you have?

I'm using XFree86 4.0.1-1 w/ a GeForce 2 MX. I've got 128MB of RAM, which (I would think) would be sufficient... http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/smile.gif
