hello, i would like to first off thank the nice people that helped me, i have successfully installed the debian base system! i am now in the process of getting various software applications from the internet (i couldn't get the package wizard thing to configure right :p) i download the archives to my windows partition and then use an fs mount from linux to access em'. my question is, what do you think is good to have? i currently only have xfree86 and gnome...

Thats a difficult question to answer. What do you use your 'puter for, games, development, creating documents etc etc? Even if you supply us with this information the answers you get are going to be heavily biased :)
My advice is to download all sorts of stuff, compile them and play with them and get a feel for your OS and what you can do with it. You might want to explore buying a distro, as they all come with a variety different apps.

so did you just download these apps in tar format or what?

yes, that is how i download them :) the only problem i have run into so far is xfree86 won't install properly but i am subscribing to the newbie mailing list. maybe i can get some help like that...
