I installed Slackware 7.1.
All seemed to go well. I then configured X.When I enter "startx" I get the Gnome
GUI but some of the text is readable in the
dialog boxes and some of it looks like barcodes. Lots of vertical bars where the text should be. Other than that the screen resoltutions cycle though no problem. And also my mouse pointer isn't moving where I want it to. It's there but it just bounces around the edges of the screen.
Thanks for your help.

I configured X the same way I did with Libranet Debian and RedHat 7. Both of them
are running fine. I have an ATI Rage 128
card with 32 meg of video ram.
By the way, I got the mouse figured out.
Hey, thanks for your help Sickboy.

Mouse problem - disable gpm (or just don't install it the next time you install Slack)

Which XFree version are you using? Slack 7.1 defaults to 3.3.6 but has 4.0.1 on the contrib cd. If you do not have the contrib cd, you can download the 4.0.1 package at http://www.linuxmafia.org
