I downloaded the source files (in three tarballs total) for X4.1.0, and I've followed the instructions on the install, but i can't start x now. I get an error that says something to the effect of "could not load NVIDIA kernel driver" (for my Geforce2MX). I had 4.0.1 installed before i tried to upgrade, and it wsa wokring with the newest NVIDIA linux drivers.

GETTING TO THE BOTTOM OF THINGS: You may ask why I wanted to upgrade X in the first place? Well basically it's that "newer is better" mentallity, and I want to have experience in compilling, installing, and configuring things under linux. I got tired of my hand being held by mandrake, so i did a bare install of mandrake (did nothing but development tools, and networking support). I upgraded the kernel to 2.4.7 and that sort of worked (i can't mount my windows partitions now, even tho i enabled fat support in the "make config" phase. I don't want anything to do with rpms (maybe once i'm confident that i could do everything without rpms i might start using them again). I am going to just to a bare install of mandrake again (because i dont know how to remove X completely, and start over, if you could help me do that i'd love it). Also i tried to install kde2.1.2 from source tarballs and the install seemed to go fine, but i don't see how i am supposed to start kde. "startkde" and "kde" are unrecognized commands.

If you're interested in learning Linux stuff Debian is probably more friendly to someone compiling from source. I use mandrake here on all my computers so don't anyone call me biased towards Debian :)

If X wasn't starting using the nvidia driver you could of tried reverting to the nv driver just to see if things were working and then went from there.

I've always thought about doing this myself but there are lots of distros out there just for people who want to learn how to set up their own Linux distro which sounds like what you might be interested in. You can do a search for this stuff on freshmeat.net or sourceforge.net but here's an example of one that looks good: http://sourceforge.net/projects/lfs/
