Install Mnadrake or redhat as your first linux. They are great for easy install and learning, then when you feel your ready, install slackware. It is the best around in my book. hands down.(debian is oooh so close...but not quite there)

always remember rpm -i
always remember tar -zxvf
always remember ./configure
always remember make, make install

If you decide to recompile your kernel, make sure you remember to double check all the options you installing and NOT installing as you may miss out on some killer features.

Enjoy linux.....Post here.....We shall help

Glad to have you in the family. Please feel free to make yourself at home.

Good luck!
