AWebDesign 01-07-2001, 10:12 PM Hey, Whats the stats on the thing? Aaron suckaMC 01-07-2001, 10:41 PM Pretty much the same as the specs listed here: http://www.obsolyte.com/sun_ss2/ except that it has the full 36mb of RAM in the SIMMS (in addition to the 64mb on board). mine looks exactly like the bottom most picture, except that it has a graphics card and the 2 drives are (obviously) diffrent. I think both drives are around 500mb, though i'm not sure if either work. My playing around with it got interrupted by school and other hardware. [This message has been edited by suckaMC (edited 07 January 2001).] suckaMC 01-09-2001, 02:58 AM is anyone interested in the 2? if so i'll clean it up, otherwise its going back in the Closet of Antiquated Technology. TM anti_seen 01-09-2001, 03:04 AM I would be interested in that system... any idea what you would want for it? I'm a student so I can't really afford a lot now. This might be a stupid question but what type of monitor connection does it use? I know on my friends SGI it has a completely different interface, is it that way on Sparc as well? ------------------ Radio Shack, You've got questions... We've got blank stares. Ryeker 01-09-2001, 05:37 AM Just wondering, why do you want an old SPARC system? I've used SPARC machines before. They aren't that exciting unless you need to deal with them. For roughly the same price, you can get a Pentium II system, which will run laps around those old things (SPARCstation 20s). At my old job, we had basically an unlimited amount of SPARCstation 20's to play with. I'd equipt one up with like 128MB of RAM, 9GB SCSI drive. It was nice. I still prefer my Pentium III though. I went through this before... but I got over it. What you do want is an UltraSPARC. That's power... and lots of $$$. ------------------ ryeker@yahoo.com anti_seen 01-09-2001, 03:57 PM To my knowledge thoses are 64-bit CPUs, 2 other programers live in this apartment... I know that I would like playing on an "outdated" 64-bit system just for programming. ------------------ Radio Shack, You've got questions... We've got blank stares. Ryeker 01-10-2001, 04:50 AM Na, I don't think those old SPARCs are 64-bit. UltraSPARC are. I'm pretty sure that SPARC-20s are 32-bit and UltraSPARCs are 64-bit. Anyways, what difference does it make? I used both types of systems (UltraSPARC IIe with four 450Mhz CPUs - http://www.integrix.com/products/servers/rs450.html) and it's really not that exciting. Just a fast system. Taking time to learn the different stuff and how to use it was more of a pain that anything else. UNIX is UNIX no matter what platform. If it was a whole new OS (like Solaris or IRIX), that would be something. Linux on a SPARC, I'd suggest save your time and learn how to compile Apache or something. ------------------ ryeker@yahoo.com forrest 01-15-2001, 11:26 AM i have a sparc classic if you're interested i might sell it. there's more info on http://truffula.net/~forrest/computers.shtml xulfralos 01-16-2001, 05:29 PM If you really want to learn Solaris in its native environment, by all means, get a Sparc. If you are planning on getting certified in Solaris, it will be a major help. I have a Sparc 10 with 192 MB RAM, 2 45MHz CPUs, a 24-bit framebuffer, and 2G + 1G hard drives with Solaris 8 installed. Oh, and I have a Sun 5 kb/mouse. I have a 20" Sun monitor, but I need it for when I get my Ultra 10 (64-bit). How much would you pay for it? (I need a good laugh) justlinux.com
