I've got a five year old packard bell 586 (I think) that's got a pentium 100, 16 megs of ram. I want to expand on the RAM, but I'm not sure what type to use, anyone have any idea what type of chip a 5 year old machine uses?

My guess would be EDO RAM....but you may want to check with a site like http://www.tomshardware.com or http://www.aceshardware.com for more info on the different types of RAM. Your best bet would be to either hit Packard Bell's website and hope they have the tech specs of your PC or compare your actual chip to the descriptions on one of the above sites.

72pin parity, non-parity, or edo. The non-parity may be referred to as FPM.

Hard part is knowing what your machine will support. Those packard-hells are known for being extremely propriatary POS's.

Good luck. You may want to buy from a local dealer - you will pay more than the best price at www.pricewatch.com, (http://www.pricewatch.com,) but at least you will be able to talk to the guy about bringing it back and trading out if needed.

go to http://www.crucial.com/ it'll let you pick thru make and model to find out exactly what your machine needs

EDO is over priced now it runs about $2 a meg, same with 72 (if you can find it used buy it) I have serveral 72 pins just laying around. But I wouldn't bother with upgrading any ram in that slug, too much for too little...
EDO- will always be too slow and too expensive
non-parity and parity- doesn't really matter too slow

Packard Bell is well known for using cheap stuff. Sorry to say.... So I doubt your system will support EDO. The best and (Safest?) way to go with be with non-parity RAM. My P 133 wouldn't support EDO.

*smirk* Yea, the thing is a real piece of ****, but I test-drive linux on it to make sure I can handle a task before doing it on the main machine in the house, problem is, I install linux on it almost weekly and the thing is just so damn ssssllllooooowwwwwww.

Slim, about your 72 pin edo that's 'just laying around'. Do you have a 32 meg you can part with?

Are you looking for 16 MB two sticks or 32 MB Each. How much would you like to pay? I think I have a few 16 MB EDO sticks in the box, parts box that's it.

One 32mb 'stick'. Got a mysterious 32 here (have no idea where it came from) and want to pair it.

Thanks
