How about a most active of the hour (like a top 5 posters)... We could have like a little logo saying "<user> on fire !!!" <xyz> number of posts in the last hour.

It would be especially good, because if you saw someone who was online who knew their stuff and your question was quite specific, you could just PM them.

That kindda defends the forum search... who will anyone be able to use it if everything was answered in PM.. but if you could subscribe to.. say Debian problems, and a user defined the post as debian related then you would get a PM when you logged on with a link.. that would also make forum searchs easier..

From the practical point of view, how would you decide who's online? Anyone who's made a http request in the last 5 minutes? I suspect the only people who click "log off" are those with multiple identities.
It would be cool to see the people who are online (unless it was all 16,000 :eek: )

I've seen other sites that have listings of the current online usrs (I think www.debianhelp.org (http://www.debianhelp.org) is one of them... only be there once or twice, tho, so I may be thinking of another site).

take out the craig factor, when dealing with LNO member #'s
CF=10000
16000-CF=6000 real members

so it would only be a max of 6000

and as blarg says, some forums show it , not as a giant list, but as a star or whatever next to the persons name in a post or when you click their profile or whatever
but if it aint part of UBB, then ???

It stinks that you can only regisiter one account per e-mail address now.

I run a mail server so I can add an infinite number of aliases, but it's still a pain.

Some of these features are in other BBS systems. I'm trying to pursuade the uppers into it, but...can't say anymore :mad:

Despite the CF fake users total don't even add up to over even 100 people :)
