Hi,

Sorry to bang on about this but I think the rating method needs a review.

Its a great idea (being able to know who is good and who isnt for help) but so many times I have seen grasshoppers ask some of the most mundane questions and some of the juniors really know their stuff.

As it stands everytime you post you get a point. If you post a question then you DONT know your stuff therefore if you start a topic then in the future it would be better if you dont get points for this. You should only get points if you REPLY to a post. However if you post in 'how i did it' then sure, a point should be awarded.

All too often people start a topic and then reply back with answers and further information on their problem. Surely its easy to change the cgi script to tell if a person starts a new topic then not only do they not get points for starting it but also they dont get any further points from just posting extra ingormation about their problem or asking more questions on it.

All this said, I am over 60 points and I am STILL NOT a grathhoppa :( but from my own arguements above I shoudlnt be as I just ask too many questions! (even my former PhD supervisor said the same thing - funny that ;) )

I think the only reason why you are still a junior grasshopper is because there is a bug in the board that is not switching users over to grasshopper once you reach 45 posts.

But often I will post a topic hoping for a quick response and then solve it myself and then post the actual answer ... hard to differentiate between the two. This also may or may not be as helpful as me answering a direct question that someone has - for all I know, my own self-answered question will help tons of other people but they just won't post letting me know.

The grasshopper/jr grashopper thing is being addressed, and will always be based on post count. No biggie, really. You should already be a grasshopper.

I think the peer-rating system is best, as long as it is metricated wisely. The one at advogato.org claims to be very accurate and hard to "stack", so for the UBB designers it might behoove them to read their technical papers on their rating metrics and how they perform weighting. I mean, it's obvious that someone who is rated 5 stars should have a bit more power in their vote than someone who is rated with 1 star. But someone who is rated 5 stars over 100 votes should have even more say than someone rated with 5 stars over 10 votes. So, it gets complicated and I have no clue how UBB handles that. But I'm pretty sure it does more than simple weighting like simply multiplying your vote by your rating as a weighting factor.

The other funny thing with the board is sometimes you show with a 3 star rating then you post and it shows you with more or less stars and this is happening without anymore votes. Also Strike keeps showing as HAL in some posts and Grasshoper on others.
