I have mandrake 7.2 running but I want to get onto the newtwork neighborhood in my uni. It woudl be nice if someone can wittle down all the steps into a nice easy to use NHF on how to achieve this process.

XS, there is a NHF on setting up Samba. IMO it is an excellent document to follow. I had my Samba up and going painlessly. The only thing you have to tinker with afterwards is setting up your shares and users. Give it a shot and see how it works for you.

Better would be to lock it down tight and only use samba as a client...and the excellent "animal book" on samba is online for free - urls been posted a few times, especially in the GAGB thread ...

The only commands you really need to learn are smb start/stop, and smbmount. Try this:
/etc/rc.d/init.d/smb start
smbmount //systemname/harddrive /mnt/systemname -o guest. Keep in mind that you have to edit smb.conf to get everything working, and you also need to create the directory /mnt/systemname. (Systemname being the name of the windows system you want to access. Harddrive being the name of the shared hard drive on that particular windows system.)
