I've just installed the beta 8.1 (freq 3) of
Mandrake, and I only can get to KDE in X.
There is no Gnome choice. I can't find the
switchdesk option in the KDE menus either.
There is Konqueror, Mozilla, and Galeon, but
not Netscape. Anyone know how to get to
Gnome?
The setup is good, and I was easily able to
get my USB modem going in under 10 mins
without a kernel recompile.
The last official release allowed a choice when
logging on in graphical mode, which included
Gnome.

I really hate to insult your intelligence by asking this, but did you use some default setup options when installing. You may have opted out of gnome simply by not choosing it as an option.
It is also very possible that, being a beta release, it does not have gnome or netscape. I know that I read somewhere that netscape in linux is going the way of the Dodo as far is inclusion in distros.
Of course I am making this all up as I go, because I have not actually tried installing Mandrake 8.1 beta.

I think you are right about Netscape, it's being
replaced by Mozilla.
But I chose all my programs in the install,
and I do know Gnome is in there. It's just
that KDE doesnt seem to have a "switchdesk"
and the graphical login does not include Gnome
as it had in 8.0

How stable is that version of Mandrake? Does it default to gcc 3?

have you tried getting to gnome manually? i.e. changing your .Xinitrc to exec gnome-session (or whatever it is for gnome).

The more recent versions of Mozilla (0.9 upwards) are more stable than Netscape anyway. :)

Hence the name BETA.
Do you honestly expect it to work perfectly? Beta testing is for users to report bugs so they can hopefully be fixed in the final version.
If you don't like being a beta tester, then I would suggest you get the latest stable release.
