Buy a router that can do PPOE and NAT.

i'm just looking for anyone who has tried setting up verizon dsl in linux - if it's possible, if it's hard, etc. i'm spearheading the operation to install dsl in my apartment. as the only linux user, and most knowledgeable computer person in the apartment, i want to get up and running as quick as possible, so i can build my firewall box (gonna use freeBSD me thinks). just looking for info.

thanks though,

Yes, it works :D with linux just fine...use pppoe client or patch your kernel's pppd with pppoe support.Heck it even works under FreeBSD/NetBSD.Of course they don't support any of the Unices, only windows and mac.Hope this helps some.

p.s. i'm not sure about dhcp setup because it did not work for me under slack (damn pppoe)...

Tell me how it goes. I've got a Covad circuit with static IPs now but they're dumping my contract in November so I may have to go with Verizon.

I was simply going to buy a cheap Netgear and spare the resources on my PC.

I have BellSouth DSL, which uses DHCP, Dynamic DNS and PPPoE. They don't support Linux, Alcatel 1000 modems or Netgear routers and I use all three. In spite of all this, my desktop and laptop both run Slackware and connect just fine through the unsupported hardware.

What you need to do is find out some things about Verizon's service. Do they use DHCP or do you get a static IP? Is it a bridged connection tied to a MAC address or do they use PPPoE authentication? Is their protocol G.DMT, G.Lite, etc.? What hardware do they provide? When you know these things you can then get whatever else you'll need. Until then, you're running blind.

I used to have GTE, now Verizon for net service and ADSL. Here in Southern Cal anyway, they used to use DHCP, and getting it up with Linux/BSD was as easy as just setting up the network and calling the DHCP client at startup (which most distros will setup for you anyway). Nowadays I've got a static DSL line through a local UNIX supported ISP and I have no idea if Verizon is still on DHCP or if they've moved to PPPoE.

The only thing I can tell you: expect delays, overcharges, screwed up phone bills and more headaches with Verizon. My experience, YMMV. Luck!
