After trying Progeny Debian and Mandrake 7.2/8.0 I've decided to try RH 7.1. Progeny didn't like me and drake was just a *****. So I popped in my RH cd and told it to install to my F drive. It told me that it couldn't due to something > 1024 iirc. Does that mean I have to reformat/partition my drive then install? I'm trying to triple boot ME, XP, and RH. This is the first time I've ever seen that error. Any help or good manuals/NHF referances would be a great help.

have you enough hd space, and most importantly a free part of hd for linux
i think you can install on a windows partition but i wouldnt recommend it.
how big is this hd of yours, as ive installed mandrake after the 10gb part of my hd

RedHat 7.1 uses the LILO bootloader which (I don't know why) won't work if the /boot partition is beyond the 1024th cylinder of the HD (about the 8gig mark)
The solution would be to make a partition for /boot before the 1024th cylinder. Redhat 7.1 doesn't care about where it is installed on the drive, it's just the /boot partition that has to be before cylinder 1024, you can put the rest wherever you like.

Thanx for the help guys. I've got plenty of space (around a gig and a half) but I'll have to make that boot partition. How big does it need to be? 5 megish?
if I remember right it needs to be 16-23 megs...from memory though, be careful.

32MB maximum. I think it should be around 16 MB min. I've got the RH7.1 manuals here. They don't specify min, but have an exaple of 16 MB and I've got 16MB here, works fine. They do give the 32 MB max. Have fun.
Right, if you are putting it on a dos partition, keep it as dos and tell it to install it there. I think it'll ask where to put the /boot at, tell them at the beginning. consult www.redhat.com (http://www.redhat.com) support they should be able to help you.
If you're doing as a linux partition, Make the boot first, then swap, then root or whatever else you want to partition.

Thanx for the extra help. Gonna install this booger later and see if it's any better than Mandork.

If you already have the partitions RH should just warn you about the 1024 cylinder issue but will allow you to go ahead with the install and things will be fine.
