Keyser Soze 07-30-2001, 05:53 AM You sooooo need to do a search on this, but a couple of tips to be provided....kill unneeded services, do the hd tweaks, maybe get a lighter desktop(KDE is the equivelant of Win2000 and needs more resources than that). Good luck. JG 07-30-2001, 06:00 AM What Keyser said........and part with some cash for extra ram...in my humble opinion go for at least 128MB JG bobby swartz 07-30-2001, 06:06 AM can someone please prescribe me another xclient other than kde, something that you have experienced and enjoyed. :) dvdnut 07-30-2001, 06:06 AM try blackbox what distro are u using as some come with most window managers these days for you to pick kde is v heavy on the usage side but that is because it looks nice and smooth gnome is just as bad, but if you have a beefy pc then this shouldnt be a problem i have a 166mmx running 32 meg and kde is slow but usable of course nothing beats cli but u cant have it all bobby swartz 07-30-2001, 07:43 PM im using corel linux,, blackbox...isnt that a windows manger, is my desktop enviroment laggy because of kde or the window manager?? bdl 07-30-2001, 07:58 PM Your system is lagging because KDE is a hog. Dump it and run Blackbox or FVWM2, both very lightweight window managers that will draw the desktop, allow you to configure it to your hearts content and give you much more solid performance. Please checkout bbthemes.org (http://bb.themes.org/), blackbox.alug.org (http://blackbox.alug.org) and fvwm.org (http://www.fvwm.org) for more information, customization help and more cool stuff. Personally I run Enlightenment, which is better than KDE but still takes alot of memory, else I'd recommend that; however, I do use FVWM2 and Blackbox as well, they're both alot of fun and very stable. Luck! slayer17 07-30-2001, 09:40 PM 48 megs of ram will get you lag in most cases, but listen to the others go with blackbox or anything older than 3 years old. Best preformance will come with simple CLI. Go crazy with the command line brother, that is the best for pure speed and power! :) bobby swartz 07-30-2001, 10:11 PM I can dump kde and pick up enlightenment because kde is a xclient and enlightenment is a windows manager, they are completely differnt. Rob 'Feztaa' Park 07-30-2001, 11:17 PM Um, not sure what you're on about... KDE, enlightenment, blackbox, fvwm2, etc etc are all completely interchangeable... they are all window managers. The only difference between KDE and the others is that you don't get any pretty icons on your desktop, which is a good thing because icons are useless and slow... bobby swartz 07-31-2001, 02:01 AM there seems to be a confusion here, kde is a xclient not a windows manager, do you konw the difference? Domin 07-31-2001, 04:37 AM Uhh, no my little newbie friend, KDE is a window manager. TacKat 07-31-2001, 09:51 AM Actually, KDE is NOT a windows manager. KDE has it's own windows manager (kwm) but it is wholly un-necessary to run KDE. Any windows manager would do just fine as a replacement. Giscardo 08-01-2001, 12:14 AM What processor do you have? If you are feeling frisky you might try recompiling everything with -03 optimization and with optimizations for your cpu... justlinux.com
