does anyone know why sometimes we need
gtk_widget_realize() ?
what does it do and why do we need it?

Yeah Vince, my name is Vince, Vince. Actually it's Vincent, but people call me Vince, Vince. And about your problem, here's what my GTK+/GNOME book says:

Realize and unrealize:
You can call the functions gtk_widget_realize() and gtk_widget_unrealize() from you application, but it is rarely necessary. The show and hide functions take care of it for you.

A widget is realized if its window, and other internal resources, are allocated. When the window of a widget is realized, it must have been assigned a parent window already, and that parent also must be realized. A widget is realized by calling gtk_widget_realize().

An unrealized widget returns to the form that it looks when it was created orginially. Its window is deallocated and any events destined for it are removed from the event queue. If necessary, the window is hidden and unmapped before it is unrealized. A widget can be unrealized with a call to gtk_widget_unrealize().
