I downloaded and extracted the .iso file for Mandrake 7.2. I then burned it all to CD. The CD is a good burn and all of the directories and files are listed the way the README file says. The only problem is that when my floppy boot disk tries to install off the CDROM, right away it says 'the disk in the cdrom does not appear to be a valid linux cd". I am not sure what the problem is. I am new, please give me some help. Thanks.

You may have to try using a different CD brand. Or if it's a CDRW, then try using just a CDR.

It was a CDR, but I guess I'll try a different brand. Thanks.

Go into your BIOS (hit F1 and enter setup) and change your boot sequence. Have the machine try to boot from cdrom.

I did try and boot from the CDROM with the first CD I burned. I also tried that with the second CD I burned (on different media). No luck either time. The same problem happened again when I booted from the floppy with the second CD. I also put some of the files that were buried in the dosutils/autoboot directory on the main directory of the CD just in case that was the problem. I hope the .iso file I downloaded wasn't bad.
If you put the CD in to your drive under Winders, does it autorun? If not then there is a problem. Additionally, what program was used to burn the CD? Not all CD authoring programs handle ISO images very well.

It does autorun under Win.
I used NTI Cd Maker Pro, came with my memorex burner. First I had to unpack the .iso file since my software does not burn straight from the .iso file. I used winimage 5.0 to do the unpacking.

make shure you are not burning the cd using ms joliete. You have to use iso9660.

Now, why in the world would you extract an .iso image anyway ? Get yourself a copy of Adaptec CD Creator (or equivalent) and burn .iso image directly to a cd. It will then be ISO9660 compilant and it WILL be bootable.
