I am running turbolinux 6.0 Muzzafarath 01-14-2001, 07:06 AM It would really help if you could tell us what kind of soundcard you have - "onboard" really isn't enough... theclave 01-14-2001, 07:09 AM Hmmm....well that's the problem - don't have the documentation here, it's at home. All I know is that it's a VIA motherboard for an AMD Duron. Is there an program that will probe for it or something? Muzzafarath 01-14-2001, 07:14 AM Post the contents of /proc/pci here. theclave 01-14-2001, 07:22 AM When I opened the file in gnotepad, it was blank, so i used vi from the command prompt and it opened fine. However, I'm not sure how to copy and paste from there. Sorry to be so inept! Muzzafarath 01-14-2001, 09:57 AM Do something like this, it should work: cd ~ cat /proc/pci > output gnotepad output Then copy and paste the contents in the gnotepad window to the browser... Muzzafarath 01-14-2001, 10:40 AM Hmm, I was hoping that it would contain a bit more info about the soundcard than "Unknown Device" :/ Until you can take a look at the documentation for the mobo (or in any other way find out what kind of card it is) I can't help you http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/frown.gif theclave 01-14-2001, 10:54 AM OK, thanks anyway. I shall doubtlessly return armed with documentation sometime in the future.... TheBouleOfFools 01-14-2001, 04:24 PM Duh onboard as in it's integrated, not ISA or PCI. I have the same crap $h!t problem... only thing I can do now is pay $30 FSCKING DOLLARS FOR OSS to get sound to work. Can't wait to ditch this comcrap and get a real computer. ------------------ "I'm sorry Peter. I'm terrified beyond the capacity for rational thought." Well... you can use OSS for a month without paying... or you could download a new license once a month and never pay. http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/smile.gif That integrated sound/video can be a PAIN. Will it not even work in Soundblaster compatibility mode? theclave 01-14-2001, 06:33 PM Soundblaster compatability mode? That sounds promising, mine is 100% soundblaster compatible....I remember that much. How do I set it up (idiot-proof instructions preferred)? mattmorrow 01-14-2001, 08:38 PM When you say the command was not recognized, do you mean you never successfully ran sndconfig? Try /usr/sbin/sndconfig Also, you don't want to run it in GUI (runlevel 5). Run it in runlevel 3 or lower. It will probably locate it and test it. If the test fails, repost info. theclave 01-15-2001, 04:33 AM sndconfig isn't there - maybe it doesn't come with my distro? I read another post where a guy said that turbolinux didn't come with a sound configurator, and you had to do it 'manually' - don't remember which post.... theclave 01-15-2001, 04:44 AM Aha! I found something that looks promising - in /usr/sbin is turbosoundcfg@ . What do I do with this to execute it. I tried turbosoundcfg >bash turbosoundcfg: command not found. I tried cd turbosoundcfg (thinking it was a directory) >bash cd: tubosoundcfg: Not a directory I tried . turbosoundcfg (thinking it was a script file) >bash .: turbosoundcfg: cannot execute binary file I tried all of these as su. I'm sure the answer is blatantly obvious, but I've only had Linux running for a couple of days. theclave 01-15-2001, 06:55 AM OK, I figured out how to run the thing (how good am I!) - but... I have no ideas of the settings I need for IO port IRQ 8 bit DMA 16 bit DMA Are there any typical settings I should try, or do I need to wait until i have the manual? Muzzafarath 01-15-2001, 07:19 AM Duh onboard as in it's integrated, not ISA or PCI. Then howcome it shows up in the listing of /proc/pci? Duh.
