gcc for Mandrake 8.0

Is is smart to downgrade gcc? Specifically from 2.96 to 2.95. I heard that Mandrake has a non-standard version, and I ran into problems when trying to install MPlayer. The installation of MPlayer said that I should either downgrade to 2.95 or upgrade to 3.0. I know that if you tried a downgrade in Windows, it may cause problems. Is it the same for linux? Or, maybe I should just upgrade to 3.0????
